Man Ray

Man Ray was born on August 27, 1890, and died November 18 1976. He was an American artist but spent most of his time painting in France. He was a big contributor to the Dada (a cultural movement that begin in Switzerland during WWI and concentrated on anti-war politics) and the surrealist ( a cultural movement in the 1920s that features the element of surprise) movements. Although Man Ray did a lot of art, he is most known for his photograms, or rayographs. Rayographs are photographic images without a camera by placing objects onto the surface of photo sensitive material and exposing it to light. In 1999 he was named one of the 25 most influential artists of the 20th century my ARTnews magazine. Man Ray offered artists and example of creative intelligence.

Diane Arbus

Type: Art/advertising

Intent: Convey a message of emotion of the man and his probable pain from his tatoos

Emphasis: Black and white and texture (of the tatoos - they have a fake texture)

Element: Tone line of the tattoos
My eye went to his eyes first because there is a white around them and he looks in pain but also complacent.

Richard Avedon

Type: Art/ Portrait

Intent: Convey a message of emotion of the woman wrapped in a snake

Emphasis: Black and white, but also the color of the snake in contrast to the woman

Elements: Lines- of the body and of the snake
My eye went to the womans face first because of her dark hair

Sebastiao Salgado

Type: Landscape/art

Intent: Convey a message about the vastness of the ocean/emptiness of it

Emphasis: Texture of the ocean in contrast with the whales fin

Elements: The perspective of the photo... depending on where you look at it you get different things out of it. My eye went to the sky first.
